<<It's an extremely responsible venture,
treating the history of Rwanda sensitively and thoughtfully. As
a former educator, I'm confident too that it's a highly effective,
even exciting, tool for teaching about conflict. >>

This powerful and challenging material is presented to students
in a thoughtful way, in a teacher-guided environment. We believe
it is important cover this subject matter in the classroom because
of its value to intellectual development of students.
Pax Warrior asks hard questions and teaches students how to make
well-considered decisions. We have outlined below some things we
think will be useful to better understand what Pax Warrior is and
how it can be a worthwhile learning tool.

what you should know
|
Pax Warrior is the first in a series of
"interactive history" modules to be made available to
groups or individual students. This interactive model for
collaborative conflict resolution will be useful to students, addressing
topics that are part of the Canadian curriculum. Professional educators
have guided the development of Pax's content.
At heart, it is a learning experience.
Making good use of the "learning moment," students are placed
in a situation, first person, under the pressure created by the immersive
media presentation, and given a choice that has impact on the story.
This pressure focuses their attention on the topic of the Rwandan
genocide. Moving through the decisions students develop a sense responsibility
for their actions and a sense of their moral autonomy. |
what lessons Pax teaches
|
Pax Warrior teaches civics by combining multi-media
documentary with political simulation. Students interact with history,
navigating a decision web to follow the experience of a UN Force
Commander in the Rwandan Genocide of 1994. What are the terrible
choices to be made? What would you have done in his shoes? What
will you do to make sure this never happens again?
Compelled to make difficult choices under pressure
the student can access information in the research module or decide
to make the decision alone. Which choice to make? What are the factors?
Which tactic will be the most effective at saving lives?
Using Pax Warrior can develop a student's
cognitive and intellectual skills, allowing them to think critically
and assess situations. The specific topics also engender moral development
and a sense of civic responsibility.
